I used to work less than a mile away from where Milano Bakery stands during my formative years.    My dad likes the French bread that they make.    When I visit my folks in the D, which has been more frequent due to unfortunate circumstances, I will stop here periodically to get his supply of bread.

My last visit I decided to check out their deli section for the first time.    I picked up sandwiches for both my dad and me.    I was impressed with the selection of choices.    I was a bit overwhelmed making a decision though there were a few people ahead of me which gave me some additional time to think.

With the crowds they do have a number machine but it was not functioning that day.   Thankfully customers formed a natural line without it being a free for all.

I settled on the Piggly Wiggly sandwich for my dad and the EM Boardwalk Reuben for me.   Both sandwiches I opted for Italian bread.  For sides I chose coleslaw and potato salads.  The PW was a basic ham and swiss with lettuce and tomato.  The EM had leaned corned beef, swiss cheese, and a choice of sauerkraut or coleslaw which I chose the former.

Sandwiches took a good while to be ready but given the crowds it wasn't a problem.    Overall I thought mine was okay though I felt like mine could've used a little more flavor to it to make it stand out.   My dad was happy with his which was the more important thing.    I think they are a solid choice for a quick lunch pick up and definitely for their variety if breads.

    Elephant ear: Good
Croissant:  Not fresh enough ... perhaps day olde?

Patio: Pleasant, but an odd industrial odor in the area.

    Will I return.  No.

This bakery is at the north end of Russell street. The price isn't bad so you won't break a bank by trying the goodies. There are samples on the counter. I tried the muffin and chocolate cake. All of them are delicious and moist. Perfect sweetness.

I tried the English pies. They are big but most of them are the crust, fillings are basically pie filling mostly is the flour slurries not the fruit. Danish is huge and pretty good.

Tiramisu is ok, not made with lady fingers.

There are a lot of different kinds of bread on the side of the store.

Bread is an essential part of a great pizza.  So, when I learned that Milano's bakery makes pizza, I was eager to try it.  I soon learned that baking good bread doesn't always equate to baking good pizza.

I made my own pizza w all my favorite toppings, and I was thrilled to see abundance of toppings.  But, upon the first bite, it was clear pizza had some major flaws.

While the toppings tasted pretty fresh and plentiful, the sauce was very plain and tomatoey, as though it was straight from a can.  And the bread was nothing special and bit undercooked and doughy, which was one thing I thought they would excel at.

It's not a bad pizza for the price.  It's just a very average pizza that has potential, but falls flat.

Milano Bakery has been a staple in the Eastern Market for many years.
I am absolutely taken with the cakes, but there are literally dozens and dozens of various pastries, cakes, puddings, breads and cookies to devour.
I have had a few of the sandwiches as well. Those are good, but there is nothing like the decadence of the Tuxedo cake; and the lemon and strawberry shortcakes.
All of these cakes are made in large sheet cakes. Upon ordering, they cut you a large chunk and wrap it nicely in individual boxes. The experience of watching this is half the fun. I always imagine sitting there noshing on the whole sheet of cake. Haha!
I can't stress enough how utterly delicious the Tuxedo cake is. It's multilayered with chocolate and white sponge cakes, a creamy chocolate mousse, there's a vanilla mousse of some sort as well. The cake is covered with a chocolate ganache icing and drizzled with I'm guessing white chocolate. SO DAMNED GOOD!!!
The lemon shortcake is my second fav as the tart lemon filling contrasts the sweetness of the icing and sponge cake...HEAVEN!
I'm making myself want more. I'll stop here and urge you to check out this Eastern Market treasure.

There is a pretty sizable private parking lot. Cash and cards are welcome. It's kid/family friendly. Also a good place to dine for lunch after a day of shopping the rest of the market.
